Interpretation & Validation

Railway GPR performance is influenced by antenna configuration, ballast condition, moisture, material contrast, track access, survey speed and the depth of the intended target.

Important survey considerations

  • A radar reflection indicates an electromagnetic contrast and does not by itself identify the material, defect or engineering cause.
  • Fouled ballast, moisture and heterogeneous construction may alter signal attenuation and the appearance of layer boundaries.
  • Metal track components and surrounding infrastructure may affect survey configuration and interpretation.
  • Reliable comparison between survey areas requires consistent collection parameters, positioning and processing methods.
  • Results should be correlated with maintenance records, engineering drawings, visual inspection and intrusive evidence where required.
